As part of the renewal and rejuvenation of the older districts of Dublin, a modern complex with a footprint of around 16,000 m² is being erected on the site of the city's former Smithfield vegetable market.

The ground floor of the building will offer retailing space, with ample carparking in the 3 basement levels. The 6 upper storeys, with a total of 10,500 m3 of floorspace, are intended for both office and residential use. Moreover, a 6-storey office and apartment tower is to rise atop the main building. Developers Fusano Properties Ltd. have employed G&T Crampton company as the Main Contractor. The structure shell is scheduled for completion by August 2004, and the building should be ready for occupancy from the spring of 2005. Together with their sub-contractor Tricastle Construction Ltd., G&T Crampton have been working on the Smithfield Development since January 2003, using a wide range of different Doka formwork systems.
The complicated shape of the structure called for detailed formwork planning by the design engineers at Doka Ireland. In the basement levels, the tried-and-tested Dokaflex 1-2-4 slab formwork system is in use. As it was necessary to work on all parts of the structure at the same time, a relatively large quantity of Dokaflex 1-2-4 formwork - 11,250 m² - had to be commissioned. Several of the areas needing shoring extend across 3 storeys and had to be shored to heights of around 14 m – no problem for the Doka load-bearing tower Staxo. The site is very satisfied with the Doka formwork systems and with their great versatility. Even the 80 cm thick load-distribution slabs were formed with Dokaflex 1-2-4.
On the lift shafts and stairwells, whose layouts vary constantly in the lower storeys, Framax framed formwork is being used. The crew are particularly enthusiastic about the new shaft-formwork solution being used here. This features the Framax stripping corner I, which is making a big contribution to the speedy progress of work. When it comes to forming the approx. 9.0 m high columns in the entrance concourse, Tricastle Construction Ltd. is relying on Doka Column formwork Top 50. Three sets of this formwork are in action on the site.
Around 7000 m² of Dokaflex tables are in use in the upper storeys. The irregular geometry of the structure made it necessary to plan and fabricate tailor-made custom tables. The great savings which these delivered, in terms of both labour and equipment costs, meant that they more than paid for themselves. The Doka Ireland technicians came up with exactly what the customer required here, as no infill zones are needed anywhere in the entire structure.
