In order to meet a critical 21-month contract for construction of the 43-storey Al Seef Tower in Jumeirah, the main contractor opted for Doka formwork systems to ensure a seven day floor construction cycle by the 12th floor.

he Project Director, Suheil Al Rayes, confirmed that the main contractor, Al Habtoor Engineering, needed a formwork system proven in the region if they were to be able to meet the tight deadline. “We needed a system which is both fast and can achieve the necessary high quality finish for this project,” said Suheil Al Rayes, adding, “Safety of the system for our operatives, particularly for the external formwork, was also a key factor.” Not least, Al Habtoor's decision to use Doka formwork systems was also due to the very satisfactory experience which this prestigious construction company had had with this formwork on the Al Jaber Complex (Shangri-La Hotel) in Dubai. On completion of the residential and preparatory works, Al Habtoor started construction of the basement, ground, mezzanine and 43-storey Al Seef Tower on 1st June 2003 in a 21-month contract. Top 50 formwork systems were in use right from the earliest stages, first as one-sided wall formwork for the exterior walls of the basement levels, and later as tied (two-sided) formwork on the upper storeys. Moreover, the columns on all storeys were also formed using the Top 50 system. The floor-slabs are all being formed very efficiently indeed - with Dokaflex tables: Up to the 12th storey, a slab area of 1370 m2 per floor had to be formed. Above this, the area expands to approx. 1500 m2 due to the cantilevering balconies extending out on all sides. In order to "de-link" the vertical and horizontal forming operations on each storey, the central shaft core, with a cross-section of 3.5 x 13.5 m, is being formed and poured ahead of the other operations. Doka climbing formwork 150F is in use here (as well as on the exterior walls). The floor-slabs follow two storeys behind. Jointly developed in collaboration between Al Habtoor and Doka, the formwork concept has made for a highly streamlined construction sequence, with the 7-day cycle scheduled for the typical stories being obtained - as intended - by the 12th floor.
