Greenpoint Stadium, Cape Town, South Africa
On course for the World Cup with Doka Formwork Technology
The “Rainbow Nation” is to play host to the Football World Cup in 2010. Preparations for this sporting mega-event are already in high gear. Like in Cape Town, where a truly superlative football arena is currently rising beside the ocean: the Green Point Stadium. Designed to seat 68,000 spectators, this architecturally outstanding structure is wrapped in a visually striking translucent building envelope. When it came to constructing the spectator terraces, the contracting JV of Murray & Roberts and WBHO opted for efficient formwork solutions from Doka. The tight timetable, and the large number of inclined pylons and stepped beams to be formed, called for the use of high-performance formwork. Doka South Africa has scored here with its detailed formwork planning, cost-effective formwork solutions and comprehensive on-site service.
72 MF 240 climbing formwork units and 1300 m² of Large-area formwork Top 50 are in action here for forming a total of 72 inclined pylons. The 50 m tall pylons are inclined 17° towards the outside. Together with 216 stepped beams, they provide the structural support for the spectator terraces.
The giant oval of the new football arena at the foot of Table Mountain comprises three spectator terraces, borne on 216 stepped beams and 72 pylons. To construct these inclined pylons, 72 climbing brackets MF 240 and more than 1300 m² of large-area formwork Top 50 are in continuous service on the site. To meet the tight schedule, as many as 36 pylons are being “climbed” at the same time. From the level of the second spectator terrace upward, these 50 m tall pylons are inclined 17° towards the outside. The versatile Climbing formwork MF 240 is easy to adjust to the changed geometry of the structure, with no need for any time-consuming modifications, thus ensuring that work moves ahead swiftly. A number of the MF 240 platforms and Top 50 large-area formwork units were pre-assembled by the Doka “Ready-to-Use” service and delivered to the site ready for immediate use. Following training by Doka field service technicians, the crew were able to assemble the bulk of the formwork equipment on-site.
Staxo load-bearing towers deployed on large scale
To carry out the works on the up to 25 m long stepped beams, the Doka Formwork Experts crafted a custom solution from Staxo shoring towers and Top 50 large-area formwork. The shoring towers, complete with the timber-beam formwork and the working platforms, can be repositioned by crane in large units. This ensures a rapid and economically efficient construction workflow. The wide working platforms, with their all-round guard rails, also facilitate placement of the extensive steel reinforcements and provide a high degree of workplace safety. “The individual parts of the Staxo load-bearing towers are quite light and have all got built-in connectors, so you can put up the towers really quickly and safely. This cuts the assembly times down to a minimum”, says WBHO site engineer André Montauban.
Intensive site support for an optimum construction workflow
The in-depth preliminary planning services provided by the Doka Formwork Experts make for streamlined forming operations with the lowest possible commissioning quantities. In addition, Doka field service technicians help the site crew to make the best possible use of the formwork equipment. “The thorough support that the site crew are being given by the Doka Formwork Experts is a crucial factor helping work on the project to run smoothly. In fact, it makes sure that our high quality and safety standards are upheld in every phase of the forming operations”, says WBHO site agent Mark Brooks. Thanks to the foresighted formwork planning and the high-performing Doka formwork solutions, the project is all set for on-time completion by the end of 2008.
The stepped beams for the spectator terraces are being cast using a combination of Staxo load-bearing towers and Top 50 large-area formwork, in a ten-day cycle. The facility for lifting large units by crane makes for rapid construction progress.
