Morgan Bemo needed the steel framed load-bearing towers to support a 2.5 m thick slab in the new North Ticket Hall hub shaft. The task demanded a heavy-duty system that could cope with the 6 t/m2 deadweight load of the slab and that would fit within the confines of the 12 m x 7 m x 8 m deep shaft. In total, Morgan Bemo used 64 x 1.5m x 1mStaxo towers, each with a 28 t load capacity. To help save time and avoid taking up the limited storage space on site, the frames were assembled above ground. They were then craned into the shaft, and positioned on a 1.5 m x 2.3 m grid, with a 450 mm gap between each tower. Comprising only four system components, the Staxo system is very simple to use. A lift-proof link between the frames features an integrated locking pin that can be locked or released very quickly without any tools. Doka UK also provided Framax panel formwork and special, singlesided supporting frames for the lining of the shaft, plus some Dokaflex 1-2-4 for internal stitching and formwork for tunnel offshoots from the shaft. The two-part design of the frames allowed Morgan Bemo to cast the 450 mm to 1500 mm-thick wall sections in two consecutive pours. The first pour was done using a 4.5 m high shutter attached to the lower part of the frame. The upper frame and a 4 m high shutter was added for the second pour. Once the walls were complete, Doka removed the formwork from site and delivered the Staxo system. Finally, the lower frames were brought back for the pouring of the 4.2-4.5mhigh walls above the slab. The five-month lining operation finished on schedule in December. According to John Moss Doka UK Senior Design Technician the entire operation went very smoothly. “Morgan Bemo’s installers were highly competent,” said John. “When they did have a query they would call us and we would resolve it over the phone.” Derek Austin, construction manager for the tunnelling contractor had no problems with the Doka equipment. “It was ideally suited to the operation,” he said. The construction of the North Ticket Hall is part of the second phase redevelopment of King’s Cross St Pancras Underground station. It is designed to provide the extra capacity that will be equired once the Channel Tunnel Rail Link is operating from St Pancras. Passenger numbers are expected to rise from a morning peak of 55,000 to around 82,000.
