Doka solutions support bridge reconstruction along the Brenner route

46 Bridge Piers for a Key European Transport Corridor

Doka solutions support bridge reconstruction along the Brenner route
The reconstruction of the Luegbrücke on Austria’s A13 Brenner motorway is a major infrastructure project along a key European transport corridor connecting Germany and Italy. Due to the extremely steep terrain, complex geological conditions and pier heights of up to 65 meters, the construction consortium PORR and STRABAG is therefore relying on specialized construction techniques and experienced partners such as Doka.

At approximately 1,800 meters, the Luegbrücke is the longest bridge on Austria’s A13 Brenner motorway and carries around 32,000 vehicles every day. After more than 55 years in service, the existing bridge is being replaced in stages. Doka is supplying the formwork solutions for the 46 piers that form the load-bearing foundation of the new bridge structure.

Bridge Pier Construction on Steep Terrain
As PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss emphasizes, the extreme hillside location poses significant logistical challenges for both demolition and new construction. For the construction of the piers, Doka is supplying a combination of Framax Xlife framed formwork and MF240 climbing formwork. The formwork and the fully enclosed, 2.40-meters-wide working platform are repositioned together by crane. This enables safe and predictable workflows for formwork, reinforcement, and concrete pouring operations.

“The reconstruction of the Luegbrücke is one of Austria’s most challenging infrastructure projects. This makes it even more important to have strong partners whose solutions and expertise we can rely on within the construction consortium. With its formwork systems, Doka makes a significant contribution to the safe and timely construction of the bridge piers. The interaction between planning, execution, and innovative solutions is working at the highest level,” says Franz Redl, Member of the Management Board of STRABAG AG Austria.

Tackling Complex Pier Heads at 65 Meters
The imposing 46 pier heads require a particularly sophisticated solution: They are approximately six meters high and up to 9.3 meters long. For their construction, Doka developed a solution combining Dam formwork D22 and Framax Xlife. A universal supporting construction frame positioned at the end of the pier head serves both as a working platform and load-bearing structure. The custom-designed structure transfers the loads from the pier head and helps secure the formwork against wind forces at the exposed location.

“This project requires a solution that performs precisely under demanding conditions: at great heights, on steep terrain, and with high requirements for the concrete finish. By combining proven systems with project-specific components, we create safe working environments and precise workflows for pier construction. Ambitious projects such as this one highlight our global expertise in complex infrastructure construction,” says Harald Zulehner, Managing Director of Doka Austria.

The fair-faced concrete surfaces also require precise execution. “Project-specific custom panels ensure a precise fit at the formwork transitions, creating a uniform concrete finish that meets the high fair-faced concrete requirements,” explains Zulehner.

Construction of all piers is scheduled for completion in fall 2026. Traffic will be redirected onto the first new bridge structure once it is completed by the end of 2027. The overall project is scheduled for completion in 2030.
