New DokaXdek floor slab formwork gives structure to large-scale regeneration scheme

Cidon Construction specified the next-generation DokaXdek systemised floor slab formwork system, along with Dokamatic high-speed traditional formwork tables, to support structural works across three residential towers.

The 13-acre mixed-use Dyecoats development is located on a brownfield site overlooking the River Aire, near Leeds city centre. It will provide 400 homes, helping to address the housing shortage in northern England. The first phase includes 17-, 15- and 11-storey residential blocks comprising affordable homes, student accommodation and shared ownership properties.

Led by the Latimer Group in partnership with the contractor GRAHAM, the project is transforming the former Yorkshire Chemicals site into a sustainable neighbourhood, including commercial spaces and a food hall.

Cidon Construction used the latest DokaXdek slab formwork tables and panels for Block 2B. Doka also supplied Dokamatic table systems for the other two blocks, supporting a safe, efficient and fully systemised slab construction sequence.

Prior to starting on site, Cidon were given the opportunity to test the DokaXdek system, enabling the installation teams to familiarise themselves with the product and understand its ergonomic handling and simplified assembly process.

DokaXdek is a significant advancement in slab formwork technology. This modular, crane-manoeuvred large-format Table system features flexible swivel heads that allow prop legs to be locked in place. This enables the tables to be moved out of the building without clashing with fixed edge protection on the newly formed slab below. Using panels and hanging beams, the number of props required around blade columns can be significantly reduced – an advantage particularly valuable in tight or irregular spaces. The system's streamlined composition, intuitive component layout and fully combinable table-and-panel format all contribute to reduced installation time and safer, manual handling.

At Dyecoats, these features enabled Cidon to achieve reliable slab cycles of approximately eight to nine working days for each 1,300m2 slab, ensuring continuity between concrete pours and contributing to an efficient construction programme.

One of the project’s standout benefits was the ability to use large DokaXdek tables right up to the slab edge while incorporating cantilever‑mounted edge protection. This removed the need for traditional beam‑and‑plywood solutions at perimeter zones and allowed full table units to be lifted by crane to subsequent levels in a single operation.

Alongside the tables, Cidon utilised the lightweight, anti-uplift DokaXdek panel elements, which can be placed manually. These provided maximum flexibility around façade step‑ins, internal corners, and changing column grids.

In transition zones, the tables and panels were supported by a comprehensive range of DokaXdek accessories. The DokaXdek hanging beam was particularly valuable, as it is an engineered solution that minimises the number of props needed in congested infill areas.

Despite this being the first time that DokaXdek had been used on a major UK project on this scale, Cidon’s installation teams achieved rapid assembly and consistent cycle times. They were supported throughout by Doka’s engineering and technical support teams.

The full‑edge tables with permanent edge protection made every lift immediately safe, while the hanging‑beam solution handled our large blade columns where other systems might have struggled. We were impressed by the system’s flexibility - panels dropped into place easily, infills were quick, and fewer props improved access. Doka’s familiarisation, technical support and rapid design turnaround were excellent, and based on our experience at Dyecoats, we would be very happy to use DokaXdek again on future projects.”
