Doka UK has been selected as a finalist in the Best Innovation category of the 2018 Construction News Awards with the systemised hand-set slab formwork panel, Dokadek, making the shortlist from a record breaking number of entrants.

The category highlights the best use of innovation during the calendar year of 2017. The solution from Doka enables companies to safely use a systemised hand-set panel to cantilever out from building perimeters. Installed from the floor level below, the application provides works access for a variety of tasks including the post-tensioning of in-situ concrete slabs.
This means that just one hand-set panel system can be used in both the internal and perimeter areas of a building to enable the concrete slabs to be poured. The Dokadek system in this application allows sites to minimise the number of separate systems and thus reduce site logistics requirements, simplify training and improve working at height conditions.
The system has been used on a number of high profile projects across the UK, including various uses from Northfield Construction Ltd – specialists in in-situ reinforced concrete structures. Dave Lenihan, Northfield’s Project Manager detailed: “Before the introduction of this solution, we were using component-and-time intensive traditional products to give us the required clearance for post-tensioning around the slab edge. “This meant erection times of approximately five-and-a-half days and dismantle times of one day; six-and-a-half days in total. With this cantilever solution, we have reduced this to four-and-a-half days in total; a saving of two days per floor”.
Before the awards, all finalists will attend face-to-face judging by members of the 60-strong jury, made up of the most influential clients and experts in the UK.
This year the judging panel is up made of leading clients and industry experts including:

• Helen Fisher, Director of regeneration, Haringey Council
• Mike Grice, Chief construction officer, Battersea Power Station Development Company
• David Hancock, Construction director, Cabinet Office

• Lynda Shillaw, Divisional chief executive, property, Manchester Airport
• Laura Shoaf, Managing director, Transport for West Midlands
• Keith Waller, Senior adviser to infrastructure and projects authority, HM Treasury

The winners will be announced on 12 July 2018 at a glamorous ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London, where more than 1,000 of the industry’s elite will join together for a night of entertainment, celebration and networking.
